Hello! There’s methods that i use to not get lost in UG! All i got to do is watch around and at my robe, and know how to use what i see to my advantage.
I will try to explain it here, in the memory of all companions i lost in the calm emptiness of deep UG oob.
First of all, this is the UG maps, one is with details, and the second one shows only colour transitions and starfields.

The second one is what you really need. To orientate quickly, you will need to memorize the sides (north, south, east, west) of the map as well as the colour transitions: their colour (duuh, lol) and their thickness.
As you can see, the colour stripes change if you go from south to north or north to south, but they dont change if you go from west to east or east to west. So this is one milestone that you can use. If you go for an hour in one direction and never see the colour change, it means that you definitely go straight either to West or East.
Also there are starfields. Starfields are close to the level on the East side, and far from the level on the West side.
When you are in the starfields or in the nothingness, you want to determine (from your memory) whether you are on the East or on the West side, and move along with the colour transition stripe towards the level. When the starfields end, its a sign that the level is nearby, especially if you are coming from the East side.
Remember the order of colour transitions, that can help you to understand the direction you move in. Everything changed from blue to green? You were definitely heading North! Everything changed from vivid blue to almost pitch black? You were going South!
And now there's something very important about finding the level: the way the light and shadow play on your robe! The light and shadow on your robe is the compass that always show you where the north is, because at any point of the UG (except the total blackness) light shines from the North. Its the same as looking at the mountain to find the path in all other levels, very easy!

Notes and tips:
- Don't pay attention to the mirages. The gradient in the UG emptiness is very slight, and it may create artifacts on your screen that may resemble the level. Dont chase the artifacts, mind the colour transitions and the light source!
- When you glow from your companion, it's hard to determine the light source. When i am with a companion i ask them to sit and go step or two away from them.
- Pay attention to the level cube. If you are far above (i.e. if you are tandem flying with a companion) , the level cube is bright, you can easily find where it is, so you dont need any of the methods listed above. If you are below, the fog thickens, so the level cube can be mistaken with an artifact, and you will need to use colour transition and light source method.
- Better fly than walk. If you walk, you will slide on the sand, it will change your initial direction. After each accidental slide it's better to check again where North is.
- If you went to the nothingness going from the level to the East and then got lost in the starfields, theres almost no chance that you accidentally went to the west side of the level, since level is visible clearly on its vertical (Y) axis from south to north.
- Better to not approach colour transitions that are neighbours to the blackness. If you found yourself in such colour, i advise to stop, look at your robe and fly away from the blackness. Not slide!
- Breathe, calm down, close your eyes, imagine the level and your position, think. The weight of responsibility for a companion that trusts you is heavy, but being calm gives an advantage of much clearer thinking.
I would advise testing it in the Underground alone before rushing there with the first cute second run you stumble upon (dont repeat my mistakes). If you are longing for some excercises you can try to practice on these pictures! Look at each of them and determine where the north is, then what colour transition will you hit if you go South, which colour transition is next is you go North.
Please ask questions if something doesnt seem clear!
