Connection memory (CM)
Connection memory is a rule according to which the game memorizes one's last companion and prioritizes that connection above anything else.
With knowing the rules of connection memory it might become easier to achieve some glitches, reconnect with a lost friend or stop meeting an undesirable companion.
I don't know enough about the connection memory, so this is not a complete article. The facts based on PS4 connection exploration. Please feel free to add your own experiences, i will also try to add here as i discover new patterns.
Simply speaking, if i play and disconnect from my companion through ingame means, the game will remember this connection, and if me and the same companion will happen to be in close proximity again, we will have a very high chance of reconnection.
Some facts that i know:
● CM preserves for a long time, it worked for me after 15-20 minutes of being in chapter select.
● CM works on any level, me and companion can connect anywhere, CS and then reconnect at any other level.
● CM preserves after both distance disconnect and HL disconnect.
● CM erases when internet is switched off. If i disconnect manually through PS menu, or if my internet connection suddenly goes off, the connection to the same companion will not be in priority anymore.
After playing together and disconnecting i usually wait around for a couple of minutes for the connection memory to magically work. However, as soon as one of companions goes on/off, we get the same chances as if we were meeting for the first time to start a journey, so we may connect right away or after several minutes, but with no help of connection memory here
If i meet a companion that i don't want to spend time with, chapter selecting from them and reentering the level will pair us again, because chapter selecting keeps the connection memory. However, disconnecting manually will lower the chances of us reconnecting.
Example of connection memory used in a usual gameplay:
Me and my companion distance disconnect on the Final slide in UG. Knowing that we can't reconnect at the end of the UG i hurry to the Tower, sit 2 WM lengths away from the entrance and wait for my companion to arrive. Connection memory will prioritize my companion above anyone else, and i will often not meet any other players until i am paired with my lost companion.
Example of connection memory used in a glitch:
To make cloth whale no goo, my companion needs to chirp at the mural in a 1 second window when we connected, but before they appear in my game. We connect in the Tower to initiate the connection memory. After spending a couple minutes together in the Tower, we both CS and my companion enters the tower and prepares to chirp at the mural. Now we both know, that as soon as i enter the Tower we are gonna connect due to the connection memory. On the 13th second since i entered the Tower portal in CS my companion chirps the mural, the next second they appear in my game, and we have 3 offsync levels of goo. (thank you Rebi and Aten for teaching this glitch)
I hope it can be helpful, happy reconnecting!
My knowledge about CM is scattered, so i don't dare turning it into a wiki article, but if lirewu considers it worthy, i am not against adding it there.
